Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi has declared that Sunday’s clash with Cote d’Ivoire has presented the Super Eagles an opportunity to silence their critics.
The Nigerians have been heavily criticized for the heavy weather they made of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals from a relatively easy group made up of Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.
But Mikel feels a good result against the favourites will show doubters that the Eagles mean business.
Nigeria face the Elephants in the biggest quarter-final match of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in Rustenburg on Sunday with the Ivorians heavy favourites to get through to the semi-finals.
“The quarter-final is going to give us an opportunity to go out there and show the world we can do it against very good African countries,” the Chelsea star said before the Eagles’ training session at the Olympiapark Stadion in Rustenburg yesterday. “It’s going to be tough but we’ll be up for it.”
Meanwhile Super Eagles gaffer,Stephen Keshi has reiterated that his wards will not disappoint against the Elephants of Cote d' Ivoire.
Keshi said report of fans back home being scared of the Ivorians is unnecessary and unfounded.
"If you must win a trophy you must beat the biggest and best teams so why should we be afraid of any team.
"The bigger they come the bigger they will fall. Who told you that if it was to be the Hawks of Togo it will be a walk-over?
"There is no small team anywhere and the Ivorians know. It’s a classic match and we'll show why we are the Super Eagles on Sunday," said the former Nigerian defender.
Keshi said the spirit in camp has been very good so far and all the 23 players in the squad are all healthy and ready to give their best."Nigerians should just be praying for the team and have belief in them instead of expressing fear because on Sunday it will be 11 players from Ivory Coast against the same number from Nigeria," he said
Eagles' captain and defender, Joseph Yobo said the game will be an exciting one for him as he is eagerly looking forward to the epic duel.
"They are a great team and so we are and we know ourselves well so no one is afraid of each other. It's just a case of top football giants clashing at the wrong time. I think we shall be up for it," he said.
